Call of Duty: Black Ops III for PS4 is a futuristic first-person shooter set in 2065 where cybernetically enhanced supersoldiers fight covert operations as air warfare has become obsolete due to advanced defense systems, and society fears a robotic takeover as humans have become more machine than flesh. The campaign supports 4-player cooperative play through open, non-linear missions where players customize their cybernetically enhanced operative's appearance, clothing, and special abilities like nano machines and hacking turrets, with a progression system requiring unlock tokens to acquire different weapons and gear—completing the campaign unlocks "Nightmares" mode that replays the entire story with zombies replacing normal enemies and a new narrative. Multiplayer introduces the Specialist system with 9 unique soldiers each having either a special weapon or ability—such as the Firefly swarm, heat wave, or glitch teleport—alongside momentum-based movement using thruster packs for controlled boosts, wall running, and power sliding with full gun control, combined with the Pick 10 class system and various game modes across diverse maps with multiple paths and strategic choke points.
